Yet the distinct cultural differences endured, at least as evidenced by the music in the excellent collection recorded by Wolf Dietrich. The music of Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Montenegro, Kosovo, and the region of old Yugoslavia that included parts of historic Macedonia are all represented in this set. Most is very traditional music passed on via the oral history of the region from one generation to the next, and still pretty well preserved even as late as the '70s. Solo and group performances of vocal music are the highpoint of the recording, with solo and ensemble bagpipes also a major portion of the music here. Epic songs (one a singer accompanied by the unique fiddlelike gusle), folk tunes on frula (flutes), and numerous dance tunes by small ensembles fill out this remarkable set. --Louis Gibson
