Click Here | Product Description: The culture of Croatia has roots in a long history: the Croatian people have been inhabiting the area for fourteen centuries, but there are important remnants of the earlier periods still preserved in the country. Ancient monuments from the Paleolithic era are very poor and consist of simple stone and bone objects. Some of the earliest remaining historical features include 100,000 year old bones of a Neandertal man near Krapina. The most interesting Copper Age or Eneolithic finds are from Vu?edol culture . Out of that culture sprung out Bronze Age Vinkovci culture that is recognizable by bronze fibulas that were replacing objects like needles and buttons. Bronze Age culture of Illyrians, ethnic group with distinct culture and art form started to organize itself in 7th century BC. Numerous monumental sculptures are preserved, as well as walls of citadel Nezakcij near Pula, one of numerous Istrian cities from Iron Age. |

Click Here | Product Description: The Yugoslav War of Succession had untold ramifications for those living in the embattled region. What often goes overlooked, however, is the impact that the war had on people from the former Yugoslavia who were living abroad. We are Now a Nation considers the effect that the war and the independence of Croatia had on Croatian diaspora-homeland relations. In doing so, it confronts complex questions of ideology, nostalgia, social suffering, nationalism, and identity politics as manifested in the relationship between diaspora and homeland Croats.Daphne Winland draws upon extensive, multi-sited ethnographic research in both Toronto and Croatia from 1992 to the present, exploring the problematic nature of Croatian identity. The occasion of Croatian independence, she suggests, resulted in the emergence of a politics of ?desire? and ?disdain,? which further complicated efforts to define ?Croatness? (Hrvatstvo) both at home and abroad. The idea of the Croatian homeland has become, therefore, an ambiguous space of identification, a source of either conflict and tension or unity and pride, a place to remember, to forget, or to return to. The first book-length examination of North American Croatian diaspora responses to war and independence, We are Now a Nation highlights the contradictions and paradoxes of contemporary debates about identity, politics, and place. |

The name Stjepan Radic is as well known to Croatians as Sir John A. MacDonald is to Canadians. In 1904, Radic mobilized the peasantry to form a populist movement that resulted in the Croat Peasant Party. The CPP fought to reform Yugoslavia's centralist state system and to amend the structural flaws of the parliamentary system. His assassination in 1928 marked the end of the country's short democratic experience; a royalist dictatorship immediately followed. Croatia failed to achieve statehood or autonomy within Yugoslavia, but Radic's indisputably dominant role in the formation of Croatian national consciousness is widely celebrated among Croatians today. The story of this charismatic, ideologically eclectic politician and his role in nation-building makes for fascinating reading. In North America, with our increasing involvement in the political conflicts of the former Yugoslavia, we cannot afford to remain ignorant of the major historical forces involved in the early Serb/Croat struggles for power and identity. This is an essential work for political scientists and other specialists in the area. |

From the supplier: Croatia achieved independence in 1992 after centuries of bondage and fragmentation. The Croats originally believed they could be free only within a common Balkan state. Events in the late 1980s and early 1990s allowed the Croats to overcome the Serbs in becoming a free state.
